Tim Brunero - Nice guy

Working in radio you get to pretty much interview anyone in the media within reason. Most of them can be vacuous wankers, but ocasionally you come across a great person who is willing to have some fun, Tim Brunero is one of these guys.
After being a finalist on BB last year Tim has proved to be somewhat of a social commentator, and a good one too. He does stuff for the chaser guys, blogs daily for WHO magazine & host a entertaining video podcast about BB housemates. I have spoken to him twice now and i have been blown away both times, he is fun, not to serious and very intellegent. the reason we spoke to him Wednesday night was after a Sydney morning Herald article claimed he was dating Karen who recently got evicted from the house. I was nervous about calling him and asking about because last time he had given me his mobile number. But i had overthought the whole thing, he was more than happy to chat about it. I like Tim, he is now friend of the show.

Things to watch in June

ok so here is my pics for TV shows this June, if you have Austar..Great if you don't..Don't worry plenty on free to air to wet your whistle ..

Like most of the people I work with I am a massive foody.
by far my favorite show on TV for food would have to be "the Barefoot Contessa" she makes it just like mum...You will find her on the Lifestyle FOOD channel.....

Attack of the show This show is great, you can find it on the "HOW TOO" channel
It's for DVD, computer, eBay, TV geeks it's all things pop culture
the only thing I don't like about the show is the movie reviewer guy, he is a total wanker, he reviewed wolf creek and said it was about and I quote "some guys who murder some people" so obviously has someone writing that for him, but a good show none the less.

Globe Trekker - formerly known as Lonely Planet, this show was first started by aussies living in London, you may have a few of their books, which are a must when traveling. These are more like documentaries that a travel show, they go off the beaten track and see the stuff you really wanna experience. See it on the ABC & on discovery Travel & leisure.

This weeks Must Have records!

Angels & Airwaves otherwise known as AVA
Tom DeLonge's new band, there single "The Adventure" is an anthem. Infact the whole album seems to be a mature Tom, very listenable well written, and the poduction is some of the best i have heard in recent years from a rock band.

The Flaming Lips - At war with the Mystics
these guys have been around since 1986, you may remember "she don't use jelly" there song from 1994 I think that was the year...don't quote me! well this is their latest just as weird, just as great listen our for "the yeah yeah yeah song"

Eliza from Tsunami is a Nutcase!

On Thursday afternoon I visited the offices of Tsunami magazine, I have a new column which will appear monthly called "Drex in the city" basically my ramblings off here but in print. I said to her just lift a few of my blogs, that will make it easier....But nooooooo, to difficult apparently. To much editing involved, those who know her know that she is a Nazi for grammar & spelling
so here is an e-mail she send me after I got back to the office, spot the mistakes.

Drexalicioius...

We must discuss your column.
Ok, so I have read through all of them and they are good, but not exactly what we need for your space. Firstly, they are too short, and we can't just get additional words from outta space. Secondly, I think running two stories will take away from the essence of the column, and thirdly, while I think the fact that they are mainly music based is tops, I would prefer to do something a little more abstract for the first one, so people don't think it is a music column. Do you know what I mean??

Therefore, I think we should run my personal fave - the first one, about the meteor thing. I think we will go with for this edition if that is cool with you.
Following that, music based is fine, as long as we reach 300 words minimum, okili dokili??? Thank you Drex.

I also found it funy that you think Family Guy is the funniest show on TV. My cousin Mick loves it, and is constantly going, did you see Family Guy last night' and then proceeds to tell me the most drawn out story with voices and everything. its sort of turned me off it.

me

clearly she can't spell FUNNY, and is a simpsons fan okili dokili??? who even says that?
thisIis why i think she is craIy, but i still think she isAndps...and that!

The end of the world as we know it....And I feel fine!

Well what a can of worms we opened last night, at around 6:30pm I took a call from Dean a listener of the show, he said he was driving up the Bruce and had seen a ball of fire shoot across the sky. As I put this call to air the phones went nuts, people as far north as Marcoola and as south as the Gold Coast had witnessed the exact same thing.

I called Bilko our morning announcer & avid Conspiracy theorist to get his take on it because not 4 days prior he informed me that there is an expected meteor shower over the southern skies in the next few weeks, which is meant to be a asteroid breaking up over earths atmosphere. Bilko is a massive fan of George Noory's Coast to Coast AM show in The US, which is a show for people who love this stuff and is compulsive listening. Their website is amazing it covers things like space travel, UFO's, government conspiracy theories & the paranormal. I called Brisbane air traffic control and they confirmed it was either a Meteor or space junk burning up, but it was traveling so fast they missed it on their radar. When I arrived home I noticed it had made the 10:30 news with Sandra Sully...Everyone had seen the same thing, I just wish their was footage of it.

The power of Myspace for bands & people

The way record companies & bands promote themselves has changed forever due to the influx of users on myspace.com
This website has been around for ages now, and allows people to basically promote themselves or even their bands. The current myspace users total almost 7 million and this is a very powerful resource for bands who are unsigned to promote themselves, their gigs and their music.

Local sunshine coast artist Sarah Reeve (who has appeared on the show) has a myspace page that promotes her unique music to the masses. As with a ton of other great local bands, but this isn't exclusive to unsigned artists, massive bands have noticed the power of myspace and developed their own pages the likes of End Of Fashion & Wolfmother have their own pages to as a supplementary to their normal websites. Even I have a Drex myspace

An old friend of mine Rebecca Horne has just being named the new marketing & content manger of myspace Australia she starts on May 29th, so she will be on the show to talk about all things myspace, and tell us what we have is store from the Australian version which is now up and running.

The Music Genome Project - Pandora

This is something you just have to know about pandora.com otherwise known as "The Music Genome Project" I stumbled across this site by accident about a year ago, and still it takes my breath away by it's accuracy. If you tell it your favorite song it designs a radio station specific for your taste & mood. You know what it would be better if I just copy & paste the process in here.

The Music Genome Project

On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.
Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome.

Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

Over the past 5 years, we've carefully listened to the songs of over 10,000 different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

pandora.com make sure you tell me what you think.

Tina Cousins is as nice as pie

"Pretty Young Thing" is the name of Tina's new track, and it's great, we spoke to her live from London and she is one of the nicest people I have ever interviewed, there is not even a hint of ego with this chick, when you do interviews you usually get called by a tele conference company and they connect you, but this fab chick actually called herself, I said "hello hot91" she said "hi there drex it's Tina" she had me there.

We chatted about how she has massive appeal amongst the gay population of Australia and how they have supported her career better here than in the UK. Then she informed me that she will be appearing at the Rolling Rock Nightclub in Noosa (owned by another wonderful person named Deb) that gig is June 10th - a Saturday for those of you playing at home.

I planted the idea in her head that I should introduce her live on stage to which she agreed would be a lot of fun. I love it when people are nice to interview you tend to discard the questions and just have a chat, which is generally how I like to interview.

Teddy Geiger Interview

What a talent Teddy Geiger is, This guy is just 17 and is already a massive star in the US. I first saw this guy on an episode of that dodgy TV show on MTV called "Miss Seventeen" where he was to be made over by the contestants before he played a showcase concert, the story goes that one of the chicks snuck into his bag when he was playing and stole his mobile number....What a tart...Who does that?

So after seeing this I did a bit of research on him and discovered that his song was to be released here as well, so here begins my journey of trying to get this kid on the phone, one call to Sony is Brisbane had me worried it would not happen, you see in radio there is a pecking order for international interviews, the order goes - Capital city first, then large town then country town, we lay in the middle in this system. After 2 weeks I finally get an e-mail from Sony saying they have locked in a spot for me, upon hearing this I was happy that it had worked out, then Sony informed me that HOT91 was the only station in Australia that had added his song to their playlists.
The reason for this is that most music directors wont add a song if they aren't already known, but that is not always the case. So the interview time rolls around and I get him on the phone, I was pleased to find that he is a big a fan as me of Ben Fold Five. Apparently he was a massive geek in high school too, and was afraid to talk to girls at all, but he finds now he can't get rid of them....You will be able to listen to the interview when I put it up on the new hot91 website which is only 2 weeks away from launching.

Something I saw, and reminisced about

So here is something you might be able to help me out with, Last night after arriving home from a long day at work I turned on channel 7 to watch my usual Thursday night ritual of American Dad & The Family Guy which incidently is the funniest show on TV.

I witnessed a scene in which stewie the baby is incased in a bubble due to a sickness, he utters the words "I have had a hell of a day" then the cut away sequence goes into a pinball cartoon with him as the ball while the "123456789101112" songs plays.......And for some bizarre reason I cannot figure out where I have seen this before, I assume it was from sesame street from when I was a kid.

Perhaps it was a counting lesson thing to get kids to learn how to count to 12, but even more weirder is the fact that I have witnessed people sing this on occasion as a joke....

Virgin blog

well, maybe this is the start of something that will end quickly or flourish like a flower of some description, the new radio show is in to it's 3 rd week and we have already had a ton of great guests on, like Lior...Boy do the ladies love him, one such person here at the station was swooning like a crazed woman, so I set her up to meet him at the gig, she met him, but seem disappointed when I informed her via SMS that he was married and Jewish.

We also spoke to Nick from End of Fashion too, he was a great guy and you can tell that Nick and the rest of his amazing band are onto something, I find it interesting that these days it is not just record companies that promote their artists most bands now (including End of Fashion) have a myspace page, which is in essence is a way to advertise your band or yourself to the masses myself included. So if you like a band chances are there will be a myspace page for them.
